Self abandonment

  • Gymming
  • Eating right
  • Getting enough sleep
  • Investing in self- improvement
  • Meeting new people
  • Trying new activities
  • Reading
  • Traveling
  • Spending time with friends
  • Spending an evening with spouse/partner

The above mentioned activities are supposed to be good activities and should fill us with happiness. However, we notice that even though we do these activities we do not feel happy from within.

We then question what it is that is missing-why is it that these activities are not making us feel fulfilled and why does the inner emptiness still exist. Why is it that despite having good friends and a partner we are feeling unloved?

The answer to these questions is that we feel empty and unfulfilled despite participating in multiple activities and having the love of friends and partner because we have been abandoning ourselves.

What is self- abandonment?
Self -abandonment is not taking adequate care of the emotional needs of core self. This leads to anxiety, boredom, emptiness, loneliness, fear .

How do we abandon ourselves
  • By staying in our head instead of feeling our feelings
  • By self-judgement
  • By turning to various addictions like sugar,alcohol,TV,over-work to numb the feelings
  • By making others responsible for our feelings and well-being

How do we stop abandoning ourselves
  • By deciding to take care of our emotional needs our self with firm commitment
  • By feeling our feelings instead of running away from them and taking appropriate action which is in our higher good to deal with the feeling
  • By taking ownership of our own happiness and not depending on others to fill our inner emptiness

How to overcome fear of engulfment in relationships

Fear of engulfment is the fear of getting controlled by partner or losing yourself in the relationship. It is a very strong fear of being swallowed by the partner and makes one run for the hills. The individual with this fear hence completely avoids relationships sometimes or is unable to sustain them and runs each time things begin to heat up. This fear is actually a fear of rejection .Due to this fear the individual gives too much in the early phases of the relationship so that they can please their partner and to ensure their partner likes them. They take responsibility for their partners feelings and want to make sure the partner stays happy and does not reject them. But this too much giving from the fear of rejection makes them feel trapped. The solution to this is to develop stronger boundaries, not take rejection personally and religiously practice inner bonding to develop a very strong sense of adult self. Let us see examples in of a person named Raymond who is 44
