Is meditation the only way out of stress?

 Let us begin to understand what meditation is .Meditation is an age old technique which usually utilizes the breath to be able to calm the self, develop one pointed concentration and relieve stress.There are many meditation techniques like zen meditation, loving kindness meditation,mindfulness meditation, body scan ,kundalini yoga and meditation. When people start mediation , thoughts come and go and its harder to maintain an empty mind .As meditators progress, concentration deepens, equanimity and calm are achieved and stillness occurs. There are people who have to work harder than others to achieve this state while for some people it occurs with ease.Further, there are people who enjoy meditation more than others. Now coming to the cardinal question of whether meditation is the only way out of stress-the answer is no.Meditation alone is not the only stress relief avenue.Good sleep, a healthy diet and exercise and indulging in things one enjoys like hobbies are also avenues for s...

Accepting impermanence

The very nature of life is impermanent.The color of leaves of trees changes, seasons follow each other cyclically, we grow older by the day, we experience periods of happiness, sorrow and misery followed by other emotions again. Thus, life is not static.It is constantly changing-ever evolving. In the context of this evolution,if the shifts in events are not major, or say "tectonic shifts", we presume life is , in general, stable .However, major events like a divorce, loss of job or loved one throws us off balance. Understanding that these events too, just like the "lesser significant" ones, are a part of the ebb and flow. It is the hankering for permanence and stability that creates misery.Attachment to supposed stability is the root of it. Keeping a not knowing mind, flowing freely,accepting what comes in the path and holding onto the belief that"this too shall pass" is the only way out!
