How to create a self care routine

6 am alarm.Snooze 15 minute intervals.Waking up with a bang.Subway to office.Mayo sandwich breakfast and sweet coffee.Conference calls.Asshole boss barking orders.Client demands.Project after project.Chinese takeout diner while at work.6 more cups of sweetened cappuccino . Belly fat and sleep deprivation.Exhaustion.Burnout. Screw my paycheck and upcoming promotion; I just want to sleep for 48 hours flat.Questioning the meaning of existence.

This is the typical cycle of events any busy executive in a large city experiences. They contemplate leaving their job and going to a monastery for a few months seeking peace but then the paycheck lures them back. Also, they are addicted to the grind even if they don’t admit to it.
Back to work and the burnout continues.

What then is the way out?
For someone who has to go back to work there is no way out other than to strike a balance between time for self and work no matter how horrible the hours or demands at work are.Time for self includes self care-both on the physical and emotional well –being front.

The following are the steps to a self care plan:

Physical self care
  • Eating healthy and on time including whole grains, fruits, vegetables, lean meats.Avoiding caffine and sugar.Ditching the bagel and doughnut.
  • Working out moderately-3-4 times a week.
  • Getting a quarterly health  check-up done.
  • Getting as much sleep as possible on weekdays and making up for sleep debt on weekends
  • Pampering the body-spa/massage/sauna

Emotional self care
  • Having a positive mindset
  • Practicing mindfulness meditation and relaxation
  • Reading enriching literature for emotional development
  • Focusing on positive affirmations
  • Leaving stress behind where it belongs-in the workplace
